Stop Windows from Rebooting After Automatic Updates, 2011 Edition

This is an update of a post from a couple old age ago. Recently I migrated to a new PC, simply neglected to update the settings as described below–and suffered the same consequences. Swearing you, Microsoft–again!

Show of custody if this has happened to you: You step away from the computer awhile, Oregon fifty-fifty overnight, and when you come back, complete your programs and documents are gone. Why? Because Windows downloaded some updates and took information technology upon itself to reboot without your permit.

Gah! This happened to ME again just yesterday, and I almost hopeless whatsoever in-progress work as a result. Thankfully, Word had auto-saved my open document, and Chromium-plate was fresh enough to re-open all the tabs that I'd been viewing. Still then, I think information technology's ridiculous that Windows would ever reboot without my enterprise.

Thankfully, there continues to embody an easy fix for this–provided you really remember to take over advantage of it. If you've been plagued past the same job, here's what you need to do:

1. If you'atomic number 75 a Windows Scene operating room Windows 7 user, click Start, type Windows Update, then score Enter. (XP users should head to the Control Panel and seek out Windows Update.)

2. Click the Alter Settings option at left. (That's where it appears in Prospect and 7; not whole sure about XP.)

3. Transfer the setting to Download updates but let me pick out whether to instal them.

4. Click OK.

That's all on that point is to that. Windows may still nagger you about instalmen updates, but at any rate it won't reboot without your permission.
